The picture window's greatest design feature is its versatility, made possible by the simplicity of its construction. With no operating mechanism and a very minimum amount of aluminum framing, picture windows can be designed in sizes and shapes to accommodate places where no vented window would dare to go. They can be grouped, arranged to compliment other operable windows or doors, or used alone. Certainly energy-efficient picture windows provide the most light and the greatest expanse of clutter-free viewing area in places where those considerations are more important than ventilation. Window Craftsmen's picture windows - every one custom made to the contractor's specifications - provide all these benefits and meet substantial design pressures as well. They are available either as conventional or as impact products. Typically the conventional window is glazed in 3/16" annealed (or tempered) glass, while the impact product utilizes laminated glass consisting of an .090-inch-thick layer of Saflex polyvinyl butyral interlayer sandwiched between two lites of 1/4" heat-strengthened glass. Some designers specify impact glass for reasons beyond the safety issue, since such glazing provides important energy, noise-reduction, and security benefits as well.
